The Four Words That Guarantee Success - and Why You Don't Act on Them!


The motivational speaker was in full flow.

His success was legendary.  His mansions, his waterside homes. his luxury cars and his private jet were by-words not just in the business world but in the popular press and social media.  Barely a week went by without his smiling, bearded face filling the newspapers and the TV screens, and never a day passed without the profits of his companies being quoted in the financial news.  If anybody knew about success in business it must be him.  The convention hall was packed with business people from around the world who were hanging on his every word.

They had traveled from round the world, flown many thousands of miles and spent many tens of thousands of dollars to attend the convention.  This guru's slot was the most publicized and the best attended of the three days for he had promised to give them the Secret of Success in any business.

His first words had been electrifying - "I will teach you the FOUR WORDS THAT WILL ENSURE SUCCESS IN YOUR BUSINESS! 

After that seemed like he was teasing as anecdotes followed business examples from his own successes, and the audience grew restive.   Each time he was about to reveal the FOUR MAGIC WORDS he seemed to lose track and switch to another topic. 

Eventually some of the audience could stand it no longer.  They started to call out "The words, the four words, give us the words!" 
The Guru stopped in mock surprise.  "do you want to know the FOUR WORDS that will Guarantee success? he asked. "YES!" shouted back the audience.

"Are your sure?" asked the guru. "YES" was roared back.

The guru paused.  You could have heard a pin drop.  Speaking slowly and deliberately he said "Here you are.  These are the FOUR WORDS that will guarantee success in your business

"PICK UP THE PHONE!"

There was a stunned silence, then pandemonium.  Was this it?  The Phone, in the era of email, social media, video and internet marketing?  Patiently the guru explained.  "People buy from people, and from people they know, like and trust.  Building a business is first and foremost about building relationships."

The bad news is that many people are scared of the phone, and scared of rejection.  Robert Kiyosaki famously described how when he was on the point of being fired from the Xerox company for failing as a salesman he took a voluntary evening job cold calling to raise charity donations, literally "dialing for dollars".  He overcame is reluctance to make the calls and got used to the many rejections, and in a year went from being about to be fired to being the top salesman.  We can admire his courage and persistence, but even Robert Kiyosaki would have welcomed help and tools to ease his path and speed his progress.
