The Four Words That Guarantee Success - and Why You Don't Act on Them!

The motivational speaker was in full flow.

His success was legendary.  His mansions, his waterside homes. his luxury cars and his private jet were by-words not just in the business world but in the popular press and social media.  Barely a week went by without his smiling, bearded face filling the newspapers and the TV screens, and never a day passed without the profits of his companies being quoted in the financial news.  If anybody knew about success in business it must be him.  The convention hall was packed with business people from around the world who were hanging on his every word.

They had traveled from round the world, flown many thousands of miles and spent many tens of thousands of dollars to attend the convention.  This guru's slot was the most publicized and the best attended of the three days for he had promised to give them the Secret of Success in any business.

Hypnosis - does it really work?

At last, it's official. Hypnotism really does work - and it has an impact on the brain which can be measured scientifically, according to one of America's leading psychiatrists.
David Spiegel, from Stanford University, told the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science that he had scanned the brains of volunteers who were told they were looking at coloured objects when, in fact, they were black and white.
A scan showing areas of the brain used to register colour highlighted increased blood flow, indicating that the volunteers genuinely 'saw' colours, as they had been told they would.
'This is scientific evidence that something happens in the brain when people are hypnotised that doesn't happen ordinarily,' Mr Spiegel told delegates.

Be an Optimist at All Times

Everyone wants to be physically healthy. You want to be mentally healthy as well. Think about it. Don’t you? The true measure of “mental fitness” is how optimistic you are about yourself and your life. In this newsletter, you learn how to control your thinking in very specific ways so that you feel terrific about yourself and your situation, no matter what happens.
Control Your Reactions and Responses
There are three basic differences in the reactions of optimists and pessimists. The first difference is that the optimist sees a setback as temporary, while the pessimist sees it as permanent.

Believe It’s Possible

by Vic Johnson

"Belief is the basis of all action, and, this being so, the belief that dominates the hearts or mind is shown in the life." –Above Life's Turmoil

You will rarely attempt something you don't believe possible and you will 'never' give 100 percent of your ability to something you don't believe in.

Some years ago I was listening to a friend speaking to a business audience. She quoted a teaching by David Schwartz from The Magic of Thinking Big that rocked my life. She said, "The size of your success is determined by the size of your belief." Now that was the first personal development book I ever read and I've read it at least 20 times since. I'm sure that I had heard that concept many times before that night. But it impacted me so much that I wrote it down and must have looked at it a hundred times or more in the thirty days after that.

Confidence is Knowing and Going

“The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure.” — Sven Goran Eriksson

What is confidence?  This is a great question to ask because confidence is a precursor to getting results.
When one of my mentees asked me how to improve their confidence, I realized I needed to get a better handle on what exactly it is.  It’s one thing to have it,  another to know how to help others cultivate it.
In my experience, confidence comes from having a belief that you’ll figure it out or find a way. The pitfall is to base your confidence only on your competence.  The problem is that you don’t yet have competence in new areas. I think the most powerful vehicle for confidence comes from within, when it’s a mission or a vision that compels you to march on no matter what.
In Overachievement: The New Model for Exceptional Performance, John Eliot, Ph. D. writes about what confidence is and what confidence is not.

Key Take Aways

Here are my key take aways:
  • Confidence is knowing and going.   Use your mission or vision to build your confidence

Five Keys to Gaining Absolute Self-Confidence

By Robert Choat

True self-confidence comes from belief in oneself and through action that proves the belief. Today, based on what I've found out about self-confidence, I am able to do things that at one time I didn't think I would ever do or could do. Now I feel like I can conquer the world! Let me take to you back to my childhood and give you an insight into the "old me."

When I was a child, both my father and my teachers thought I was "dumb and stupid." In their minds they thought that I was mentally retarded and an IQ test "proved to them" that I was. Though, such tests do not take into account stress from outside factors that contribute to a lower score. And when you add in the fact that I stuttered, it only made my so-called "dumbness" worse and led to my self-confidence to drop even further at that time.

And yet, doing things that proved otherwise was key for me getting to a higher level of confidence.

Self-Confidence: 7 Lies You Need to Stop Telling Yourself

“Be honest with yourself, and you will find the motivation to do what you advise others to do.” ~Vince Poscente
What if you could only tell—and more importantly, only believe—the truth? Not the half-truth, the white lies, or the other grey in between, but the pure, beautiful, and unadulterated truth.
If I had to pick one super power, it would be to know the liars from the truth-tellers. I would walk around in public places, eavesdrop on conversations, and know immediately if someone is lying or being honest.
I would go to social events and exercise my super power by posing my burning questions to friends and strangers alike. I would sit in the courtrooms of the world, and know instantly if the victim is lying or telling the truth. How fascinating, how disconcerting, how shocking it would all be!
Most of all, though, I would use my super power to listen to the voices that I hear in my own head, from the loud inner critic, the large ego full of opinions, and the years of social conditioning and upbringing; and I would be able to tell, without a shadow of a doubt, the lies from the truths. Oh yes!
I grew up in Tehran, and witnessed not only the horrible 1979 Iranian revolution but also the terrible war that ensued between Iran and Iraq. Even though I was very small, I remember the horror, the bombings, the sirens, and the oppression.
Mostly, I remember the way our teachers would brainwash our small little minds and fill it with the new regime’s lies. I remember that our families needed to play it safe while still helping us draw some faint distinction between those lies and the truth.
I moved to America when I was 15 years old, and today, even though I know the difference between a lie and the beautiful truth, some days the inner critic returns and insists on the lie.
But I don’t think I am alone. We tell ourselves lies, half-truths, and anything but the pure truth every day.

How to Let Go of Limitations? Here Are 4 Steps to Help You Get Started

Have you ever made a decision to make a change in your life? Then came up with a plan on how to implement it, made a start and within a couple of hours or days you were right back in the same old behavior? A little more frustrated and discouraged, and wondering why it's so hard to change? Learning how to let go of the limiting beliefs and behaviors that block our attempts at positive change is a process that requires due diligence.

If you've ever tried and failed to make changes in your behavior you'll know that consciously directing your willpower alone is ineffective most of the time. For change to be effective and long-term, it has to happen with the cooperation of the subconscious mind where our ingrained beliefs, blocks and barriers reside. After all, your mind with all its negative thoughts, excuses and poor decisions is what created this mess in the first place!
Letting go of limitations requires a deeper level of investigation and correction as outlined in the following four steps:

How to Develop Self Esteem

Our self esteem is instilled in us during our youth. Being constantly criticized by family, friends, and society tends to slowly strip us of our feelings of self worth. Our low self esteem strips us of our self confidence to make even the smallest of decisions. Improving your self esteem increases your confidence and is a first step towards finding happiness and a better life. Read on to find out how!

Don't let the wedge of discouragemnet come between you and your dreams!

Bob Proctor recently quoted this old fable, but many versions exist dating back over many decades, perhaps centuries.

One day the devil was having a sale, hawking the many diabolical tools of the trade. On display, with their price tags attached, were all the devil's tools and weapons: The arrows of jealousy, the hammer of anger, the dagger of worry, the slingshot of doubt, the axe of hatred and numerous others.
But one tool stood out above them all. Displayed prominently on a pedestal high above the rest of his wares was showcased, "The Wedge of Discouragement."

Intrigued by this little tool, which was dented and worn with use, a curious shopper inquired about the price, because the wedge cost more than all the other tools combined.

"Ah yes," said the devil, "THAT is my favorite tool of all. You see, it's so easy to use. It hardly takes any effort. All I have to do is get the very tip of the wedge into my victim and the rest is easy. Once the wedge is in, I just tap it ever so slightly and it slides in deeper and deeper.

"Sometimes I don't have to do anything - my victims drive the wedge in deeper all by themselves! A small opening soon becomes a gaping crack, making room for the rest of my tools. Before you know it, my wedge has completely split a person's dreams, hopes and aspirations in two."

"That's why the wedge of discouragement commands such a high price - because it's my most effective tool. It has opened more doors for me than all my other tools combined."

He prized discouragement because of its enfeebling, demoralizing effect.  Anger, worry, doubt ot hatred may lead an immature person to act unwisely, to fight, or to run. But at least they act. Discouragement on the other hand, hurts the person more than any of these. It causes the person to sit down, pity himself or herself and do nothing.

Now this doesn't have to happen, but unfortunately it all too frequently does. Not until we realize that discouragement is often a form of self pity, do we begin to take stock of ourselves and our predicament and decide to act ... to do something that will take us out of the unpleasant situation.

Most of us have experienced discouragement at some time in our lives, some more than others.  But it can be defeated, often with the help of a loving partner, a supportive coach or mentor, or through reading about the challenges that others have overcome. As well as the love and support of others, and coming to love ourselves, we need to continuously develop the muscle of determination and the fuel of our vision, our great purpose and our reason to keeping on keeping on.  That way setbacks or criticisms are no more than temporary events, and in overcoming them we grow stronger, not weaker.

Chris Howard used to say "When tou meet an obstacle, get Excited!  It means that you are getting closer to your goal.  No goal, no obstacles, so get excited and overcome it!

To Success in all your ventures!

3 Ways To Build Self Confidence From Within

Self confidence comes from within. But some places mentioned that you build self confidence from with-out. Example like learning a skill, achieving a goal, dressing well or changing your physical appearance. No doubt you will improve self confidence by these methods, but you don't get to address the cause of the lack of self confidence.
Since self confidence comes from within, you have to get to within to access it. In most books, you are asked to search outside to boost self confidence. Going outside to gain self confidence can create a gap. A gap that you won't be able to discover what's going on within you. You won't be able to find out the causes of your lack of self confidence. This way your self confidence is not built on solid foundation.
True self confidence comes from belief and mindset. You can be extremely skillful in some areas but lack self confidence. On the other hand, have you met someone who isn't particular masterful in any areas but are filled with self confidence?
This shows that self confidence may not have anything to do with achievements, skills or appearance. What really matter is your beliefs about yourself.
What can you do to increase self confidence from within?
Failure Is Not Failure
Start looking at failure differently. Do you get discourage when you are hit by failure? Do you get despair when things don't turn out the way you want it? We all do at one point of our life. That's because you look at failure as failure.

Coffee - A Little Story to Start your Day!

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

Then she ladled the co ffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, 'Tell me what you see.'

'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma the daughter then asked, 'What does it mean, mother?'

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coff ee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situ ation around you.

When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May we all be COFFEE?

Thanks to my Dear Friend Olimpia Pop for this story.

Confidence building - no idea where to start?

People with high self esteem behave confidently. Low self esteem stops all your efforts to be confident.  Confidence matters in:

  • relationships
  • work
  • parenting
  • life skills - decision making, achieving, improving situations or circumstances you don't like
  • expressing yourself - read more about being yourself socially
  • taking up new challenges
  • being open to change
  • self improvement
Where does self-confidence come from?
It comes from several sources:
  • from within yourself
  • from others
  • from your achievements
Some people appear naturally confident but guess what? They've learnt how to be that way and so can you!
If you lack self esteem or self-confidence you must look above for the reasons. You may be overly criticizing yourself or telling yourself negative things like "I'm bound to fail" or "I'm not good enough" or even "I don't deserve to succeed". These will make failure likely.

Maybe you believe others comments about your inability to succeed or your faults as they see them. What's stopping you proving them wrong or challenging their view instead of accepting it? Defend yourself. Your self esteem depends on it! If you have a poor opinion of yourself, why should others respect you?
Focus on what you have done and you can be proud of.

How you can become more confident and successful?
  • Look for a model (someone who is confident) and learn from them. What is it they do that makes them confident, how do they act?
  • Focus on your achievements and even if you failed try to work out what you did right and how you could succeed next time
  • Act as if you were confident!
  • Prepare thoroughly for any task so that you can be sure you are ready
  • Work on any skills you need to do what you want, you can never be overtrained or over skilled for any challenge in life.
  • Learn relaxation skills
  • Always smile
  • Set reachable goals for yourself
  • Reward yourself when you succeed
Unsure which are the best confidence building tools?

How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

There's no room for adventure and excitement in your comfort zone; in fact, over time you might feel overwhelmed and trapped by boredom and fear. Perhaps it's time to stretch those limits a little! Not only will your life become more exciting, but you'll also build confidence and improve your luck
.
  1. Make a fool of yourself. One of the biggest things that holds many of us back is our fear of what people think. After all, you don't want people to think you're weird or rude or creepy or obnoxious or annoying, do you? But wait -- think about the most lovable, magnetic people you've come across in your life. Odds are, they weren't the meek, agreeable people who are reliably pleasant to be around.

Do Not Let Limiting Beliefs Sap Your Confidence!

Psychologist and mental health blogger Elisha Goldstein quotes a favorite author of mine, Don Miguel Ruiz, in his post “4 Steps to Getting Free from Limiting Beliefs”: “You see everything is about belief, whatever we believe rules our existence, rules our life.”
I’ve been using Ruiz’s book, “The Four Agreements,” to help me process the beliefs of others, especially toward me (i.e. “people who struggle from depression are lazy”). But Elisha is right when he explains that the beliefs we hold about ourselves are just as disabling and disempowering as the ones other folks hold about us. He writes:
Of course, whatever we believe colors the lenses of how we see the world and our very next interaction. If we believe we can’t give that speech, lose that weight or live without our Blackberries or IPhones every minute it’s going to be a heck of a lot harder if not impossible to do so. The same goes for getting through anxiety, depression, or addiction. We start to integrate fundamental beliefs in this world from the time we’re in the womb. We’re already beginning to sense the environment around us, taking in and processing information. As life progresses we start to integrate this information as truths. Everything is fresh and new, so what we see must be how the world is. If our parents were erratic or abusive, we interpreted the world as unsafe or insecure and that stayed with us as a feeling of fear to this day. Maybe there is the belief that it’s impossible to love or be loved. Or perhaps they didn’t pay attention to us and so we sprout the belief that we are unworthy. However, at the end of the day it’s all just a story, not a truth, not a fact.
We have the ability to change our stories and beliefs, of course. But the process is difficult and doesn’t produce magic overnight (unless you’re smoking weed as you try). Here are four steps that Dr. Goldstein suggests to form new neural connections that will assist toward mental health and develop breaks before we hit panic:
